Tendring has higher than average levels of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and childhood Asthma. COPD is a long-term condition makes breathing more difficult, and can make everyday tasks a challenge. Latest figures show that the rates of COPD in Tendring are 3%, this is higher than the Essex rate of 1.86%). There is currently no cure for COPD, but treatment can help slow the progression of the condition and control the symptoms.
Asthma and Lung UK state that there is increasing evidence that singing regularly as part of a group is good for general health and wellbeing, and it seems to be especially good at improving quality of life for those living with a lung condition.
A pilot twelve month Singing for Lung Health initiative will be delivered across Tendring, through the creation of a bespoke singing groups to support those with COPD or severe respiratory conditions. Funded by TDC's Public Health Grant it receives from Essex County Council. The singing groups must be located in different areas of the District.
Following a request for quotation, up to two music practitioners will be selected to be funded to undertake training and to deliver singing groups in Tendring as part of the Singing for Lung Health pilot.

To select up to two music practitioners, following a request for quotation, to be funded to undertake training and deliver singing groups in Tendring as part of the Singing for Lung Health pilot. Each practitioner's Musical Breath training will be funded at a cost of £600 each. Costs for room hire over the year period will be funded up to £2,400 per practitioner. Payment for practitioner's time as leader of the singing group over the year will be paid up to £3,600 per practitioner.

This one year pilot will end before Local Government Reorganisation and Devolution takes effect and so will not have an impact. Learnings may be taken forward by the future unitary authority.
