Purpose:

To consider whether to agree to host a stage of the British Rally Championship 2020.

Decision:

To agree to host a stage of the British Rally Championship 2020 to promote tourism within Tendring and to further develop tourism opportunities and to expose the potential visitor offer of Tendring’s countryside to a worldwide audience.

Reasons for the decision:

Tourism is a major employer within Tendring, generating in excess of £370m p.a. and bringing major sporting events to Tendring further exposes the natural assets and opportunities to a wider and more diverse audience. Coverage of the event is multinational. Bringing the British Rally Championship (BRC) to Tendring is a significant achievement as the event only operates over six stages – Northern and southern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Belgium and now Tendring. This will be the first time the BRC has come to Essex in its 62 year history. Businesses within Tendring rely either directly or indirectly on visitors and this event will appeal to a different visitor segment as compared to the Clacton Air Show and the Women’s Cycling Tour.

Alternative options considered:

Not hosting the event.
